Proposed cuts in federal education spending drew mixed reaction on CBS’ “Face the Nation.” Sen. Robert T. Stafford (R-Vt.) said the cuts could weaken defense. “Our young people have to have the education to understand how to use the weapons we devise,” he said. Budget Director James C. Miller III said President Reagan’s proposed fiscal 1988 budget, which would cut federal aid to education by 12.5%, would provide adequate help to students--and place less of a burden on taxpayers--by cutting grants and increasing the number of loans. But John Brademas, president of New York University, said the “infatuation with borrowing” threatens to turn some students into “indentured servants.”
