W.Va. County Panel Finally Picks Leader on 482nd Ballot

KINGWOOD, W.Va. — County commissioners who had been trying for more than a week to break a 4-4 tie and elect a president unanimously picked a leader today on the 482nd ballot.
The Preston County commissioners selected Democrat Dave Friend, leader of one of the two factions that had been unable to reach agreement.
The end of the deadlock means the commission now will be able to conduct county business. More than $100,000 in bills had piled up and tax meetings were canceled because under county policy, selection of the commission president is the first order of business each year.
The panel took 181 votes the first day, passing the previous county record of 170 set in 1970.
