A new test that uses genetic engineering technology will permit dentists to diagnose and treat gum disease early, preventing or reducing permanent damage and tooth loss, a research firm said. The test devised by BioTechnica International, a Cambridge, Mass., firm, uses gene probes to test a plaque sample for bacteria associated with gum disease, which afflicts about 23 million Americans and causes about 70% of tooth loss in adults.
