San Diego Women’s Basketball : Aztecs Upset Fresno for Second Straight Win

Joanne Gould’s only basket of the game, a layup with 58 seconds remaining, snapped a tie and helped San Diego State upset Fresno State, 66-62, in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. women’s basketball game Thursday night in Peterson Gym at San Diego State.

San Diego State, which earned its second straight victory, is 2-2 in the PCAA and 5-8 overall. Fresno State is 4-1, 11-2.

The Aztecs trailed, 51-42, with 10:54 to play. SDSU outscored Fresno State, 20-8, in the next nine minutes, finally taking the lead, 60-59, on Lisa Stevens’ three-point play with 1:47 remaining. After Yvette Roberts hit a free throw to tie the score, Gould scored after receiving a pass from Jessica Haynes.

Debbie Rinder made four free throws in the final 28 seconds to keep the Aztecs ahead. Stevens scored 17 points and Rinder had 16 to lead SDSU. Haynes scored 11 points and had 15 rebounds, 10 in the second half. Brooke Meadows had 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Wendy Martell scored 18 points to lead the Bulldogs.

UC San Diego 74, Azusa Pacific 73--Sandy Keaton scored 16 points, including a basket and a free throw in the final minute, to help the Tritons (9-7) defeat Azusa Pacific (6-10) in a nonconference game at La Jolla.

With the score tied, 71-71, Keaton scored with a minute left to put UCSD ahead. Keaton hit a free throw with nine seconds left.
