A San Juan Capistrano woman was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving after she allegedly drove her auto across the center divider on Interstate 5 early Friday and struck an oncoming car.
The woman, identified as Norma Trevino, 29, was listed in fair condition Friday at Mission Community Hospital after suffering serious injuries, including a broken back, California Highway Patrol Officer Frank Checkwood said. Trevino tested positive for alcohol after the crash, he said.
Trevino was driving her Mercury station wagon northbound on the freeway at 1:12 a.m. when it veered into oncoming lanes after striking the center divider, Checkwood said.
The station wagon struck a 1978 Cadillac driven by Ray Rizzuto, 71. Rizzuto and his wife, Margaret, 65, both suffered moderate injuries and were listed in fair condition Friday at Mission Community Hospital, Checkwood said.
Ray Rizzuto suffered chest and scalp cuts and his wife suffered two broken wrists and a broken ankle, Checkwood said. The couple are from Oroville in Northern California.
