Culver City May Curb Growth of Gas-Liquor Stores

The Culver City Planning Commission will propose that businesses that sell liquor and gasoline at the same location be prohibited from expanding.
The city has an ordinance banning such businesses but five convenience stores in the city are exempt because they existed before the ordinance was adopted. They can continue to operate until they are sold or rented to a new operator.
Jay Cunningham, city planner, said the City Council will consider an urgency ordinance that will affect all of those convenience stores, including two ARCO gas stations, that are allowed to sell beer and wine along with gasoline.
City Atty. Joseph W. Pannone said that the matter came to the city’s attention when one of the businesses asked for permission to expand. Since the businesses are considered conforming uses, the current law permits their operators to expand through the conditional-use permit process.
