Symbolics said about 40 workers have been laid off at its Chatsworth manufacturing facilities as part of companywide cost cutting.
The Cambridge, Mass.-based company, which makes computers used in artificial-intelligence programming, was booming last year, but recently has suffered from weak orders for its products.
The company said it would report a loss of something under $5 million for the second quarter ended Dec. 28, contrasted with a profit of $1.4 million a year earlier.
The 40 workers in Chatsworth are among 160 laid off throughout the company. Symbolics now employs about 250 workers there.
