Republicans refused to yield to Democrats in the battle for New Orleans as a 1988 national convention site. GOP Chairman Frank J. Fahrenkopf Jr. rejected an appeal from his Democratic counterpart, Paul G. Kirk Jr., that he drop his insistence that New Orleans host only the Republican convention next year. The Republicans signed a contract this week with New Orleans designating that city as the site of its 1988 convention provided it withdraw from competition for the Democratic convention.
