About 117,000 British telephone engineers have begun a nationwide strike that could halt repairs to most of Britain’s telephone and data services. The National Communications Union called the strike after British Telecom rejected a union demand to reinstate engineers suspended during a dispute over pay and working conditions. The two sides have agreed to talk, but management said there will be no change in its pay-raise offer, ranging from 5% to 5.8%. The union seeks a 10% increase.
