E.L. Doctorow, Arthur Miller, John Updike, Kurt Vonnegut, Dave Brubeck, Wynton Marsalis, Sonny Rollins and Billy Taylor are among 26 U.S. artists, writers and musicians who signed a petition Tuesday calling on the Czechoslovak government to end “attempts to dissolve” the Jazz Section. Seven leaders of the internationally acclaimed 7,000-member arts freedom group were arrested in September. Two reportedly remain in custody.
