U.S. to Boost Funds for Drug Eradication Efforts With Mexico

MEXICO CITY — A substantial increase in U.S. funds is available to Mexico for use in joint drug eradication programs, an American Embassy spokesman said Monday.
Press attache Vincent Hovanec said $15.5 million has been authorized for fiscal year 1987, compared to about $9.5 million in the previous year.
The American funds traditionally have been used to maintain an air fleet that has grown to 89 aircraft.
The authorization of a funding increase comes after allegations in Washington that Mexico was not doing enough in the international fight against the illegal drug trade.
U.S.-Mexican relations were strained severely after an agent for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration was killed in February, 1985, and a second one detained and beaten by police last August.
