The hot ticket in Paris this week is to the Opera Comique’s sellout production of Jean Baptiste Lully’s “Atys”--a baroque opera last performed there in 1753 and said to have been a favorite of Louis XIV, three centuries ago. A lyrical tragedy in the French operatic tradition resembling sung theater, “Atys” was long ignored by all but a few specialists and baroque music connoisseurs until the current production was launched by William Christie, a native of upstate New York. Critics have raved, including Jacques Lonchampt of Le Monde, which called the opera a “marvel” in a front-page review. “Atys,” scheduled for just 12 performances, is booked solidly through the end of its Paris run on Feb. 6.
