Lomita : Council Rejects Pay Hike

By a 3-2 vote, City Council members rejected a measure that would have increased their salaries from $300 to $330 a month.
“We make enough already,” Mayor Hal Hall said, after the city staff reported that state law allowed the council to raise salaries by 10% this year.
Council members Charles Belba and Pete Rossick, who voted for the increase, said the council did not need to act on the measure now because it would not take effect until April, 1988. Council members last got a pay raise in 1985.
The council also denied a request for a grant from the South Bay Free Clinic, despite an impassioned plea by clinic representative Craig Jones. The council voted to allocate about $10,000 in discretionary funds to the same agencies it has been supporting, most of which are based in Lomita.
Jones said the Free Clinic, which has offices in four South Bay cities but not Lomita, treated more than 40 Lomita residents last year.
