UCI’s Barham, Yates Win Doubles Match

UC Irvine’s Julian Barham and Darren Yates defeated Ken Diller and Jan Sandberg of South Carolina, 6-3, 7-6, Thursday in a first-round match of the National Indoor Collegiate Tennis Tournament at Richmond, Va.
Barham and Yates, the No. 10 doubles team in the nation, improved their record to 14-0. They will play Greg Van Emburgh and Rich Benson of Kentucky, the No. 3 team in the nation, today in the quarterfinal round. Barham and Yates defeated Van Emburgh and Benson in an invitational tournament last month, 6-3, 7-6.
The Anteaters’ Mark Kaplan had qualified for singles competition but had to default because of the flu.
