Brazil Hikes Food Prices 25%

BRASILIA, Brazil — With interest rates above 1,000% and Brazil’s year-old battle against triple-digit inflation facing virtual collapse, the government today approved food price hikes averaging 25%.
The government instituted the hikes for “market basket” foods in the face of a serious threat of recession and production cutbacks by manufacturers bristling under a price freeze introduced Feb. 28.
