Canyon High School’s chances for the Southern Section 4-A wrestling championship were severely hurt Friday night when Brett and Bryon Schultz were upset in the quarterfinals of the divisional preliminaries at West Covina’s Edgewood High School.
Brett Schultz, who entered the night with a 33-0 record in the 122-pound division, lost to Juan Naranja of Santa Ana Valley, 5-3. Schultz’s twin brother, Bryon, 34-1 at 129 pounds, lost to Westlake’s Ali Sabbaghi, 15-3.
Canyon, however, is still in contention as five wrestlers--Dan Disone (115), Chris Jeppson (157), Greg Monteith (168), Ken Gominsky (194) and Dennis Wallace (heavyweight)--advanced to today’s semifinals.
El Dorado’s three top-seeded wrestlers--Kyle Iwenaga (109), Todd Tomazic (168) and Andy Leon (178)--each won two matches to advance to the semifinals. Tomazic is the defending state champion at 168 pounds.
Loara had five wrestlers advance to the semifinals, including Brian Malavar, the top seed in the 157-pound division. Cypress had three wrestlers advance, including Chris Leuschen, the top seed at 141 pounds.
