ANTHEIL: SONATA; DAVIES: SONATA, and works by Bernstein and Stevens. Thomas Stevens, trumpet; Zita Carno, piano; David Wheatley, piano; Charlie Shoemake, vibraphone; Barry Lieberman, bass; trumpet section of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Crystal Records S665. These two trumpet sonatas make an intriguing pairing, the moody, slightly self-conscious ruminations of the young Peter Maxwell Davies contrasting with the assured, outgoing, overtly “American” sass of the mature George Antheil. Stevens and Carno, both members of the L.A. Philharmonic, give pertinent, powerful readings. Stevens’ own “Variations on Clifford Intervals” is a well-crafted piece fusing jazz and contemporary classical techniques by finding common grounds. Stevens’ “New Carnival of Venice” romp and Leonard Bernstein’s short “Rondo for Lifey” complete the disc.
