Peter Mueller of Switzerland won the men’s World Cup downhill at Furano, Japan, defeating Marc Girardelli of Luxembourg by nearly a second.
It was Mueller’s 16th World Cup downhill victory, and came on his 100th run on the championship circuit.
Despite a 23rd-place showing, Pirmin Zurbriggen remained atop the World Cup series standings with 274 points, 100 more than nearest challenger Markus Wasmeier, who suffered a spine injury in a fall and was flown home to West Germany for treatment.
