Navy Secretary John F. Lehman has ordered plans drafted to move a U.S. support base for Antarctic operations out of New Zealand because of its refusal to allow nuclear-powered or nuclear-armed ships to make port calls. Lehman recently said he wanted to move the U.S. support base to Hobart, Australia, from Christchurch, New Zealand. “Hobart is a very attractive place,” Lehman said in a speech. Congress would have to approve any transfer of the base.
