AFI FILM FEST: WEEK 2

L istings and commentary for Week 2 of the American Film Institute Film Festival of Los Angeles, which runs through March 26:

THURSDAY

“Short Entertainment” (U.S.A, 1986, 3 p.m.). A quartet of recent short subjects including actor-turned-director Richard Masur’s Oscar-nominated “Love Struck.” Masur’s effort is a keenly observed study on love at first sight gone awry after “he” meets “her” son and mother. Bliss humorously turns to horror in this delightful entry. Also worthy is “First Thing Monday,” the tale of two strangers who decide to marry for the weekend. A potentially touchy subject is overcome through gentle observation. Of lesser interest are the German-made “My Socks,” an ode to the invaluable leggings, and “Danny Irvine Always Has a Good Time,” in which two members at a class reunion discover the school bully has neither aged nor mellowed. Recommended.
