The Long Island Rail Road and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers pressed for an agreement to prevent the second strike on the nation’s largest commuter railroad in two months. An LIRR spokesman in New York declined to say how close an agreement was. An official of IBEW Local 589, which wants to extend 25-cent hourly raises to more electricians, said he was “hopeful.” Two other unions were prepared to walk out with the electricians on Wednesday if the talks failed. The union rejected parts of an agreement reached after Congress ordered the railroad’s 6,600 workers back after a strike last January.
