San Diego High School Baseball : Granite Hills Takes Helix Over the Fence in 10-4 Win

Kurt Southworth hit two home runs to lead Granite Hills High School to a 10-4 victory over Helix Saturday in a Hilltop-Moose tournament game at Mount Carmel. Southworth’s home runs give Granite Hills (3-0) five this season. The Eagles hit three home runs in their opening-game victory over Escondido.

Granite Hills defeated Chula Vista Friday but didn’t hit a home run.

“We may have had a couple, but they don’t have any fences at their field,” said Gordon Thompson, Granite Hills coach. “I hope this is a sign of things to come for us, offensively.”

Against Helix (2-1), Southworth hit a home run in the fourth to give Granite Hills a 2-1 lead. In the sixth, he added a two-run home run. By then, the Eagles--who had 14 hits--led, 10-2.

In other Hilltop-Moose tournament games:

Chula Vista 8, Mission Bay 7--Anthony Garcia had allowed only one hit over five innings and Chula Vista held an 8-1 lead, so Coach Richard Barcus removed his pitcher. But Mission Bay (1-2), defending 2-A champion, came back with three runs in the sixth and three in the seventh, and Garcia (2-0) had to return to get the final two outs and preserve Chula Vista’s victory at Hilltop High. Eric Slinkard’s grand slam in the third gave Chula Vista (2-1) its 8-1 lead.

USDHS 7, El Capitan 6--Duke Gonzalez’s triple scored the winning run in the bottom of the sixth to give University of San Diego High School (3-0) the victory over El Capitan (2-1). In the second inning, Gonzalez had hit a home run to start a six-run rally. Jeff Dejardins capped that rally with a bases-loaded triple. Tom Stilinovich pitched a complete game, despite allowing 13 hits, for the victory. Dan Freeman and Matt Smith had three hits each for El Capitan.

Hilltop 8, St. Augustine 5 (9 innings)--Troy Mihels hit a two-out, two-run double in the top of the ninth to give Hilltop (1-2) the victory over St. Augustine (0-3). With two out, Don Diffenbaugh singled, and Chad Boyd and Joe Calabria walked. Mihels followed with his game-winning double. Leon Hardt got the victory in relief.
