Filis Frederick, a toy designer who later in life helped found the Avatar Meher Baba Center in Westwood and who also edited that spiritual organization’s magazine, “The Awakener,” died Thursday of cancer at a Los Angeles-area hospital. She was 71.
Miss Frederick, who designed toys for the Mattel Toy Co. for more than 25 years, was credited with developing the paint-by-number sets that have remained popular.
She became a follower of Meher Baba during the Indian philosopher’s many visits to the United States and established his first Southern California center in 1974.
