Search for Lost Guard Fighter Delayed, Set to Resume Today

RIVERSIDE — The search for a California Air National Guard jet that vanished Saturday with two crew members aboard was temporarily halted Sunday.
Efforts to find the F-4C fighter were to resume at daybreak today, said Carol Hamilton, a spokeswoman at March Air Force Base.
Two search helicopters scoured the San Bernardino Mountains Sunday, looking for the jet that disappeared from radar screens at the Ontario air-traffic control center Saturday afternoon, Staff Sgt. Phil Jordan, a Guard spokesman, said.
The jet, assigned to the 163rd Tactical Fighter Group, apparently went down about 10 minutes after taking off from March Air Force Base. The initial search had to be halted because of rain, snow and heavy winds.
At 6 a.m. Sunday, a San Bernardino County sheriff’s helicopter resumed the search, joined by a California Air National Guard chopper from the Naval Air Station at Moffett Field in Sunnyvale, Jordan said.
