Steven M. Roberts has resigned as top assistant to Federal Reserve Chairman Paul A. Volcker to join one of the country’s largest accounting firms, it was announced Monday.
Roberts, Volcker’s staff assistant since 1983, will become a partner at Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co. and will be responsible for expanding the firm’s financial regulatory consulting practice, the firm said.
Bob Moore, a spokesman for the Federal Reserve, said that Volcker “has several individuals under consideration” to replace Martin.
Martin, 42, began his career at the Federal Reserve in 1970 as an economist in the research division. In 1977, he was named chief economist to the Senate Banking Committee under Sen. William Proxmire (D-Wis.).
Before taking the position as Volcker’s assistant, Martin served as vice president of governmental affairs for American Express Co. from 1981 until 1983.
