ABILENE, Tex. — Rattlesnake hunters gathered more than three tons of rattlers over the weekend, but one snake hunter was bitten and hospitalized in critical condition, officials said.
A total of 6,774 pounds of rattlers was bagged in roundups ending Sunday in the communities of Brownwood and Breckenridge in north-central Texas.
Greg R. Anderson, 29, was bitten while hunting alone in Brownwood’s 23rd annual roundup and was hospitalized in critical condition, officials said.
Snakes caught at the roundups provide meat for specialty restaurants, skins for wallets and belts, and gall bladders for use in medicines.
