A Roman Catholic bishop in Northern Ireland banned funerals for Irish Republican Army guerrillas from churches in his diocese and denounced members of the outlawed group as murderers and terrorists. The unprecedented move was announced by Bishop Edward Daly of Londonderry after a funeral Tuesday for IRA man Gerard Logue at Long Tower Catholic Church. Uniformed men wearing ski masks over their faces fired a dozen shots over Logue’s coffin in the church’s courtyard while mourners inside the church cheered. A church spokesman said Mass will still be said for dead IRA guerrillas but not while their coffins are within the churches or their grounds.
