Margaret Randall, an American-born writer and frequent critic of U.S. foreign policy, has lost a lawsuit in her continuing fight against deportation on the grounds she advocates world communism. U.S. District Judge John Garrett Penn, in Washington, refused to overturn a decision by immigration authorities denying permanent-resident status to Randall, who renounced her U.S. citizenship while living in Mexico in 1967. The 1985 ruling in El Paso was based on the McCarran-Walter Act, which prohibits permanent residence status to anyone who advocates “the economic, international and government doctrines of world communism.”
