The Nation : Senate OKs Spending Bill

The Senate approved a nearly $10-billion spending bill after first voting to violate the budget for what supporters said was money urgently needed for agriculture and other programs. The fiscal 1987 supplemental appropriations bill, which totals about $9.7 billion, passed 71 to 23. Most of the money, $6.7 billion, would go to the Commodity Credit Corporation, which subsidizes agriculture. Subsidy payments to farmers have been delayed pending passage of the bill. The measure contains more than $1.5 billion to cover pay and pension increases for federal workers.
