WIMBLEDON, England — John McEnroe has withdrawn from the Wimbledon tennis championships beginning June 22, it was announced today.
“There is no reason for me to come to Wimbledon unless I’m 100% fit,” McEnroe said in a telex to Wimbledon organizers. This will be the second consecutive year that three-time winner McEnroe has missed the tournament he used to dominate. He stayed home from Wimbledon last year in the midst of a six-month break from tennis to be with Tatum O’Neal for the birth of their first child. They expect their second child in September.
