Management of New York radio station WBAI announced Tuesday that they planned to broadcast controversial excerpts from James Joyce’s novel “Ulysses” early this morning despite possible punitive action by the Federal Communications Commission. WBAI program director John Scagliotti said the excerpt, which contains words and phrases that may be actionable under the new federal obscenity guidelines, would not be censored when read over the air by actress Anne Meara. Scagliotti said WBAI, sister station of Pacifica’s KPFK-FM in Los Angeles, had asked the FCC in May to rule on the scheduled reading, but the regulatory commission declined to do so in advance.
