Given the recent realization of the “global village” concept, it had to happen. The Mid-Summer Night Music Festival, beamed Saturday night to 34 countries, included everything from supertenor Luciano Pavarotti to Peruvian windpipers performing from Inca ruins. Begun in 1985 with the cooperation of only six European countries, this year’s more multinational edition, based in Parma, Italy, included a Venetian string orchestra performing Vivaldi as it floated on a barge down a canal, and two women playing George Gershwin’s “American in Paris” on baby grand pianos in Paris. Participating orchestras included the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Israel Philarmonic and the Orchestre National de France.
