Among the other rambling condemnations of the verdict in the Goetz case, Dershowitz states that, “Goetz took the law into his own hands.” One wonders who Dershowitz feels that privilege should be restricted to--the police, the CIA or the FBI. Unfortunately for Goetz, none of those “lawful bodies” were present.
It was the four punks who took the law into their hands, not Goetz. No, he took his life into his hands and chose to protect it. The jury decided that Goetz had the right to live, to exist in relative security in his travels from one point to another.
