Michael Secrest, 32, of Flint, Mich., rode into Provo, Utah, with a 15-minute lead over his closest pursuer in the McDonald’s Race Across America marathon bicycle race.

It began Saturday in San Francisco and will last about nine days before ending in Washington, D.C., a distance of 3,100 miles.

Paul Solon, 33, of Albuquerque, N.M., was the second male cyclist into Provo, and Austria’s Franz Spilauer was 35 minutes behind Solon. Casey Patterson, 43, of Topanga, is the leading female rider, one hour ahead of Cheryl Marek, 31, of Seattle.
