Ex-L.A. School Official Charged

A former city school official who was fired for his alleged role in a supplies theft ring was charged today with new counts accusing him of remodeling his house at the school district’s expense.
James L. Riley, 55, the former director of the operations branch of the Los Angeles Unified School District, was charged by the District Attorney’s Office with conspiracy to commit grand theft, conspiracy to commit embezzlement, grand theft and embezzlement. Dist. Atty. Ira Reiner alleged that in 1983 Riley added a room to his Lynwood home at a cost of $10,000 and paid the general contractor with custodial and maintenance supplies from the school district.
