Legislation to require California colleges to extend their athletic scholarships to at least five years has survived a close vote in the state Senate.
The measure, by Sen. Joe Montoya, D-El Monte, cleared the Senate, 21-13, the bare majority needed for approval in the 40-seat Senate. It went to the Assembly.
Montoya said the bill would prevent colleges and universities from misusing student athletes, complaining that some colleges never graduate their student athletes.
