A malfunctioning parachute forced the pilot of an Air Force cargo plane to abort the same ground-hugging maneuver that led to the death of five servicemen Wednesday in a crash before thousands of spectators at Ft. Bragg, N.C. Once again, a C-130 Hercules flying no more than 10 feet off the ground was to let free a parachute out of its rear cargo door that would open with sufficient force to yank a Sheridan tank out the door. But the parachute failed to open and the pilot pulled up and flew away. On Wednesday the parachute maneuver worked, but the plane smashed into the ground.
