Richard Egan, the tall and ruggedly handsome Stanford graduate who worked his way up from supporting roles to virile leads in drama and action films, died of cancer Monday at St. John’s Hospital, his publicist said today. He was 65.
Egan joined the 20th Century Fox roster of performers in the early 1950s. His film credits include “A Summer Place,” 1959; “Pollyanna,” 1960; “Love Me Tender,” 1956; “The View from Pompey’s Head,” 1955; “Demetrius and the Gladiators,” 1954, and “The Sweet Creek County War,” 1979. He also starred in two TV series, “Empire” and the canceled daytime drama “Capitol.”
