KAMPALA, Uganda — Anglican churches will no longer pass the communion cup among worshipers as precaution against AIDS, Bishop Misaeri Kavuma of Namirembe said Sunday.
He said the decision was made by his diocesan council in view of widespread concern about acquired immune deficiency syndrome in Uganda. Henceforth, the host would be dipped in the communion wine and handed to communicants this practice is already followed in Roman Catholic churches.
Health officials say 1,800 AIDS cases have been confirmed in Uganda, up From 1,130 in January.
