SUN-BAKED GLASS EYE

All creepy-crawly minor chords, defunkt bass lines, toneless vocals and tinny guitars, the Austin-based, co-ed quartet Glass Eye was caught in the opening slot at the Lingerie on Friday. Even at a merciful 40 minutes, the band’s acid-drenched, sun-baked, shut-in sound of Southwestern Gothic bohemianism took originality to the point of pointlessness.

In all fairness, the independently recording outfit sounds better on disc, where at least you don’t have to look at ‘em. Live, the best moments came on their total deconstruction of Paul Simon’s wimp-classic “Cecilia.” The worst came on--you guessed it--a group original titled “I Don’t Need Drugs To Be %&ed; Up,” at which point they were seriously in danger of writing the closing line to their own concert review.
