Elans Special, a quarter horse filly, won the $2 million All American Futurity with a wire-to-wire effort Monday at Ruidoso, N.M.
Elans Special, who earned a $1 million first prize for owner Dr. Lindsey Burbank of Leesburg, Fla., became the first filly in 10 years to win the 440-yard race.
Ridden by jockey Alex Baldillez, Elans Special broke first and finished 1 3/4 lengths in front of Elaina Rae, another of only three fillies in the race. Send The Gals Candy finished third.
Elans Special, a winner of 6 of 9 races going into the Futurity, became the betting choice after pre-race favorite Shoot Yeah was scratched two hours before the race because of a bone split.
The winner was timed in 21.49 seconds and paid $6.80, $4.40 and $3.20. Elaina Rae paid $10.40 and $6.60, while Send The Gals Candy returned $5.40 to show.
