Soviets Get Word: Leaders Want Tea to Taste Better

MOSCOW — Soviet tea leaves a bad taste in the mouths of top Soviet Communist Party leaders, the official Tass news agency reported on Friday.
Soviet newspapers recently said the authorities ordered that all imported tea be mixed with Soviet tea to improve the quality of the domestic variety.
Tass said Politburo member Yegor Ligachev, the effective Kremlin No. 2 man, told a Central Committee gathering that the quantity and quality of tea produced in the country did not meet party requirements.
He had harsh words for officials in the southern republics of Georgia and Azerbaijan, the source of Soviet-produced tea, saying harder work was needed to meet growing demand.
