Defending jockey champion Corey Black got off to a fast start at Fairplex Park Thursday with four winners, including Hot And Smoggy in the $32,800 Foothill Stakes--the first of 19 thoroughbred stakes races at the Los Angeles County Fair meeting.
Hot And Smoggy earned $19,300 to boost his career earnings over $158,000. The colt overcame longshot Happy In Space in the stretch and easily held off Claramount, which finished second.
Hot And Smoggy, trained by Mel Stute, ran coupled with Irish Robbery.
Caballo De Oro, the strongly-backed second-choice of an opening day crowd of 12,080, set the early pace but faded at the final turn. Happy In Space took a commanding lead but couldn’t hold it as Hot And Smoggy reached the wire in 1:161/5 for 6 1/2 furlongs. The winning margin was 1 lengths.
Black, 17, also won on Princess Raya in the first thoroughbred race, Five Partners in the eighth and Distant Pal in the tenth.
