Britain’s opposition Labor Party, split over defense policy, reaffirmed a commitment to non-nuclear defense at its annual conference but firmly rejected calls for immediate unilateral disarmament should it win power. In a rebuff to leftist extremists, delegates also rejected calls for withdrawal from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. The conference, which ends its weeklong meeting today, adopted resolutions warmly praising the progress in current U.S.-Soviet arms negotiations and assailing Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher for not joining efforts to end the arms race.
