Work Crews Shut Kanan Dume Road for Escape Lane

A four-mile section of Kanan Dume Road, which links Agoura Hills with the Malibu coast, was closed Friday night and will remain closed until county work crews finish building a gravel escape route for runaway trucks on the steep and twisting road, a county official said.

The closure, approved Tuesday by the Board of Supervisors, may last three or four weeks, said Dennis Morefield, an aide to Supervisor Deane Dana.

Dana recommended the closure after four people were killed in crashes with runaway trucks and recreational vehicles in the last 2 1/2 months.

The road was closed from Newton Canyon Road to Pacific Coast Highway. Morefield said county work crews will put in a 1,000-foot-long bed of sand and gravel, near the intersection of Kanan Dume Road and Pacific Coast Highway, onto which drivers of runaway trucks can steer to safely stop.
