Orange County Prep Saturday : Capistrano Valley Out to Settle Score Tonight With Saddleback

Todd Marinovich, Capistrano Valley’s record-breaking quarterback who surpassed Pat Haden’s Southern Section career passing mark last Friday, will continue his assault on state and national passing records at 7:30 tonight against Saddleback at Santa Ana Stadium.

Against the Roadrunners, however, personal glory takes a back seat to the more immediate task at hand: revenge.

In last season’s nonleague meeting between the teams, Marinovich established an Orange County all-time passing record. But the Roadrunners spoiled the celebration by routing Capistrano Valley, 48-7.

Tonight, the undefeated Cougars are determined not to be humiliated again.

After last week’s 29-10 victory over Estancia, Capistrano Valley Coach Dick Enright said he was glad to have Marinovich’s latest achievement out of the way.

“Now we can concentrate on Saddleback,” Enright said.

The Roadrunners (2-2) are coming off a tough loss. Irvine rallied in the final nine seconds to win, 15-14, last week.

In tonight’s other game, El Modena (2-2) visits Grossmont (1-3).

A scheduling mix-up early in the year had originally left the Vanguards without a game. The opponent Coach Bill Backstrom had expected, Patrick Henry, had scheduled itself to play Grossmont in San Diego instead. Rather than penalize El Modena for Patrick Henry’s scheduling mix-up, Kendall Webb, San Diego Section commissioner, gave Patrick Henry the week off and El Modena travels south. The Vanguards are no doubt happy to have a chance to capitalize on the momentum gained from last Thursday’s 10-7 upset of El Toro. Grossmont is coming off a 24-14 loss to Helix.
