American Airlines has scrapped plans to increase flights in and out of the Lake Tahoe Airport during the winter. Residents had insisted on reductions in airplane noise and guarantees of safety. Airline spokesman Al Becker said American estimated the increase in flights would have added $10 million to $15 million to the Lake Tahoe economy. The airline had 35 flights during the summer, but was forced to cut back to 19 on Labor Day. American had hoped to go back to 35 flights for Thanksgiving and again just before Christmas. A group including a representative from the state attorney general’s office was set up to negotiate with American after nearby residents complained the air traffic noise disturbed them and lowered property values.
