The Soviet Union has bought about 4.9 million bushels of U.S. corn for delivery in the year that began Oct. 1, the Agriculture Department said. Officials said it was the first grain to be ordered by the Soviets in 1987-88, the fifth and final year of a long-term sales agreement. Sales in the year ended Sept. 30 totaled about 8.2 million tons, equally split between corn and wheat. The sales were handled by private exporters at undisclosed prices.
