GTE’s income dropped 8.6% to $297 million in the third quarter. The Stamford, Conn.-based company said earnings were adversely affected by higher interest costs. GTE’s 50% share of the operating loss at US Sprint increased during the quarter to $83 million, up from a loss of $79 million incurred in the same quarter of 1986.
