Bombings and clashes with police persisted in Bangladesh despite a state of emergency declared last Friday by President Hussain Mohammed Ershad to stem opposition protests. Home Affairs Minister Mohammed Abdul Matin told a news conference in Dhaka that five more opposition leaders were released from detention as a good-will gesture before the opening of talks with opposition groups. Four politicians were freed Monday. Matin said that one person was killed and several people, including at least seven police officers, were injured in the clashes.
